Hey There Shanghai

The weekend after I went to Dandong, I went for a girl's weekend to Shanghai.  Meg, Sara and I jetted from school to the airport and arrived in Shanghai late on Friday night.  After a stop at our hostel, we headed out to the Bund to see the lights.

It was a beautiful night, and a great change of weather from cold Dalian!  We found a rooftop restaurant to check out the view, and sat up in the sky until we got too cold.  Then we descended back down to the ground to eat a bit of street meat and head to bed!

The Bund (hard to get a clear photo with my camera!)

We woke up early the next morning, and found that Shanghai was still asleep.  It took a bit for us to find some breakfast that was open!  After our meal we headed out to shop for the day.  We literally shopped ALL DAY.  It was awesome.  It is a bit hard to shop where we live as the sizes are not really equivalent.  In Shanghai we could shop and western stores, and it was a great treat!
We also went to the fake market, and bartered for some imitation goods.  Although it was a ton of fun, we were pretty tired by the end of the day!  We had a quiet dinner and then went out for an evening boat cruise.  The boat took us up and down the Bund, and we just spent our time goofing around on the top deck.  We headed to bed exhausted and happy with our new purchases.

Yu Yuan Gardens
The next morning we slept in to proper Shanghai time, and then headed out.  First we went on a strange underground tunnel tour.  You go onto a little train cart and essentially view a light show as you go underneath the river to the other side of Shanghai.  It was crazy and ridiculous!  I even took a video of the silliness.  It was touted as the first "travel and entertainment experience!"  Then we went to Yu Yuan Gardens.  We spent a few hours wandering through small markets, and then relaxed in the gardens.  It was a lovely sunny day, and we were just grateful to relax in the park.  We even hung out with some lovely little babies, until one of the mom's picked up her child and let her pee on the sidewalk....  We took that as our cue to exit!

Fresh blossoms in the sun

The weekend in Shanghai was a great escape from work and Dalian life.  Shanghai is quite western, and as terrible as it sounds it was nice to have a small taste of home (even if that taste was in the form of good shopping and fresh salads).  It is strange what you miss when living abroad!
